Nabisco Wheat Thins vs. Target Thin Wheats

I love snacking on Wheat Thins and hummus but the crackers can be expensive if I can't find them on sale. I noticed that Target's Market Pantry Thin Wheats are less expensive, so I decided to give them a try.

Price:
Target's Market Pantry Thin Wheats sell for $1.79 for a 9 oz. box. Nabisco's Wheat Thins average around $3.49 for a 9 oz. box but I have seen them go on sale for as low as $1.99. Coupons for Wheat Thins are available infrequently.

Nutrition:
I purchased the reduced fat versions of both of these products. Target’s crackers have more saturated fat (1g vs. 0.5g), more sodium (270mg vs. 260mg) and more fiber (2g vs. 1g). Nabisco’s crackers have calcium (20mg vs. 0mg) and potassium (55mg vs. 0mg).

Taste:
The crackers taste almost alike. They are so similar that I can’t describe the difference in taste and I really have to concentrate to notice it. However, the textures of the crackers are different. The Target crackers are thinner than the Wheat Thins. Because they are thinner, the Target crackers don’t have the same amount of crunch as the Wheat Thins.

I think Target Market Pantry Thin Wheats are an acceptable substitute for Nabisco’s Wheat Thins but I do prefer the crunchier Wheat Thins. I will continue to stock up on Wheat Thins when they go on sale and when I have coupons, but in a pinch, I would purchase Market Pantry Thin Wheats.

Super Fresh Coupon Policy

I have been getting some questions from readers about using coupons at Super Fresh. I contacted Super Fresh to get their official coupon policy and I have also included my practical experiences using coupons at my local stores. If you have a coupon question and you can't find the answer here, let me know!

Super Fresh's official coupon policy:

- Manufacturer's coupons are accepted at face value at all stores with no limit to the number of coupons.
- Stores which double coupons can double up to 4 coupons for 4 like items. Coupons beyond this double coupon limit will be redeemed at face value. For example, if a customer purchases 5 cans of Maxwell House coffee and has 5 coupons, the store will double 4 coupons and redeem the 5th at face value.
- The amount doubled up to varies by location.
- Customers will not receive money back if the coupon value is greater than the retail price.
- Internet coupons are not accepted.
- Competitors' coupons are not accepted. Updated 3/26/09: It appears that at least some stores are now accepting competitors' coupons. Check at customer service to find out if your store takes them.

I believe most Super Fresh stores double coupons up to 99 cents. That means a 50 cent coupon is worth $1.00, a 55 cent coupon is worth $1.10 and a 75 cent coupon is worth $1.50. On special weeks when the store is tripling coupons, 50 cent coupons are worth $1.50, 55 cent coupons are worth $1.65 and 75 cent coupons are worth $2.25. Coupons labeled "Do Not Double" will not be doubled or tripled.

In my experience using the self-checkout, sometimes coupons will double or triple beyond the cost of the item (so you get it free plus some overage) and sometimes the register only doubles it to the cost of the item (making the item free). When I use the cashiers to check out, I have have had them catch the register giving overage and manually change it to erase the overage.

Super Fresh publishes store coupons in a magazine called Easy Solutions. The magazine is usually available at the check out counter or with the sales fliers. At my local stores, I usually have trouble finding copies. You can also view the booklet online, but you cannot print the coupons from the internet. The store coupons can be stacked with a manufacturer's coupon. This means that you can use 1 store coupon and 1 manufacturer's coupon on the same item for extra savings. The store coupons usually have a limit of 1 per customer.

Frugal Recipe: Shredded Pork Roast

Wondering what to do with the 99 cent Pork Shoulder Butt Roast on sale at Super Fresh this week? Last time it was on sale I bought it but I had no idea what to do with it. I tossed it in the slow cooker with a cup of water and a packet of Ortega taco seasoning I got for free that same week. It turned out really yummy! And the leftovers the next day were even tastier. We just ate it with some broccoli and rice but it would be perfect wrapped up in a tortilla with your favorite burrito fillings. I highly recommend giving this frugal recipe a try.

Shredded Pork Roast

3.5 lb. Whole Boston Butt Pork Shoulder Roast
1 taco seasoning packet
1 cup water

Place all the ingredients in a slow cooker. Cook on high for 8 hours. Remove fat and shred meat. Pour some of the liquid from the slow cooker over the shredded meat.

Servings: 6

Red Plum Coupon Insert in Your Mailbox

Last weekend I was wondering where in the world my Red Plum coupon insert was. It wasn't in my Sunday Washington Post and I was mad. Then later in the week it magically appeared in my mailbox along with my junk mail ads, Pennysaver and Pizza Hut coupons. It turns out that in the DC area Red Plum coupons will no longer be included with the Sunday paper. They are going to be delivered to everyone's mailbox.

Thanks to Mercedes for letting us know what was going on! Get the full details at Common Sense with Money.

California Tortilla- Double Burrito Elito Points!

Attention California Tortilla diners: you can get double Burrito Elito points every day from February 16th through March 15 on all purchases (except gift cards and catering)!

With the Burrito Elito program, you normally get 1 point for each dollar you spend. When you reach 50 points, you get 5 Burrito Bucks to spend at California Tortilla.

You can also get a free taco at California Tortilla when you sign up for their very amusing Taco Talk newsletter.

Cal Tort has great kids meals that come with a kids drink (soda or juice), chips and queso and a brownie. For grownups, I am personally a fan of the blackened chicken, spinach, black bean quesadilla.

Find out if there is a California Tortilla location near you.

Free Breakfast at Ikea

Ikea is offering free breakfast again this weekend! You can get a free small breakfast and a free cup of coffee until 10:30am from Friday, February 13th to Monday, February 16th. Limit one per customer.

They are also running a Seize the Day promotion this weekend with 400 thread count sheets for $9.99 on Saturday, a comforter for $19.99 on Sunday, and a Malm 3 drawer dresser for $39.99 on Monday.

Thanks Melissa for passing along this deal!

Frugal Recipe: Pot of Beans Dinner

This is one of my favorite frugal cold weather recipes. I came up with this meal a few years ago from items I usually have on hand in my pantry. I stock up on the beans, sauce, and diced tomatoes when they are on sale and this turns out to be a very inexpensive meal. It is fast to prepare and you only dirty one pot to make it. It feeds my family of 2 adults and 2 kids with enough left over my lunch the next day.

Enjoy!

Pot of Beans Dinner
4-6 servings

1 lb. ground beef
1 small onion, finely diced
1 can kidney beans (15.5 oz), drained & rinsed
1 can black beans (15.5 oz), drained & rinsed
1 can great northern beans or butter beans (15.5 oz), drained & rinsed
1 can tomato sauce (15 oz)
1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz), partially drained*
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/8 to 1/4 tsp. red pepper
shredded cheddar cheese or sour cream (optional)

Cook ground beef and onion in a dutch oven or large pot till ground beef is browned. Drain the grease. Add the rest of the ingredients (except the cheddar cheese or sour cream). Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer on medium low for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve as is or with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese or a spoonful of sour cream.

* To partially drain the tomatoes, I dump out the liquid at the top of the can but I don't squeeze out the liquid from the tomatoes. I find the beans are too watery if I don't remove some of the tomato juice. Also, I prefer to used petite diced tomatoes.
